Check out these often overlooked tax deductions for writers
The business tax form for writers (Schedule C of the Form 1040) has a line called Other Expenses, Line 27.
What should an author or writer to include on Other Expenses?
- Books, magazines, and subscriptions. Any publication that helps your writing and publishing business or used in researching your book is deductible. Even online subscriptions! The cost of buying my book Business Tips and Taxes for Writers is a tax deduction. 🙂
- Professional organization dues.
- Professional development to make you a better writer including classes, conferences and writers workshops.
- Fees to purchase an ISBN, a Library of Congress Number (LCCN) and bar codes, for your self-published book.

Other helpful tax tips can be found in my book, Business Tips and Taxes for Writers
It’s been updated to include the new changes to the tax laws!
